Installing an Agent Skill: where it goes and how to tell it worked
A plain-English walkthrough of three ways to install a Skill, the folder each agent reads, and a checklist for when your agent doesn’t seem to notice it.
Installing a skill means putting its folder where your agent looks for skills, then starting a fresh session. That's all. Most installation problems come down to the wrong directory or a session that started before the install.
The fastest way: ask your agent
Paste this into the agent you already use:
I'd like to install an Agent Skill. Ask me which agent I use and where the Skill's folder or ZIP is. Then copy it into the correct skills directory, confirm SKILL.md sits directly inside the Skill's folder, and show me how to check that it loaded. Never overwrite anything without asking me first.
Where skills live
| Agent | Skills directory |
|---|---|
| Claude Code | ~/.claude/skills |
| Codex | ~/.agents/skills |
| Cursor | ~/.agents/skills |
| Gemini CLI | ~/.agents/skills |
| OpenCode | ~/.agents/skills |
| Kimi Code CLI | ~/.agents/skills |
| Antigravity | ~/.gemini/config/skills |
~/.agents/skills is a shared convention that several agents read, which is why one folder there often serves more than one tool. Agent vendors change paths occasionally — if yours isn't listed, or the skill doesn't show up, check its own documentation before guessing. Installing to the wrong place fails silently: the agent simply never mentions the skill.
Method 1 — the install prompt (recommended)
On any Skill page press Copy install prompt and paste it into your agent. The agent reads our agent instructions, connects the CLI, asks you to authorise in your browser and installs the Skill into the right folder.
Method 2 — the CLI
You need Node.js 18 or newer.
mkdir -p ~/.deepdoer && curl -fsSL https://skills.deepdoer.ai/cli.mjs -o ~/.deepdoer/skills.mjs
node ~/.deepdoer/skills.mjs login
node ~/.deepdoer/skills.mjs install seed-round-pitch
login prints a short code and opens your browser so you can approve the device. Free Skills install without logging in.
Method 3 — download the ZIP
- Press Download ZIP on the Skill page.
- Unzip it — you should get a folder named after the Skill with
SKILL.mddirectly inside. - Move that folder into your agent's skills directory from the table above.
Check that it loaded
- Start a new session — agents scan for skills at startup.
- Ask: "What skills do you have available?" The Skill's name should appear.
- Try the example prompt from the Skill page, for instance
/seed-round-pitch ….
When your agent ignores it
- Wrong folder. Re-check the table; make sure
SKILL.mdis one level down, not two (skills/foo/SKILL.md, notskills/foo/foo/SKILL.md). - Old session. Quit and start again.
- Name clash. Two skills with the same folder name overwrite each other.
- Frontmatter.
SKILL.mdmust start with a---block containingnameanddescription.
